Road trips are a brilliant way to see a new country and explore lots of hidden places that you might not normally see. However, good planning is key to the success of any road trip and choosing your vehicle is the first step.

Sometimes, you might decide to fly to the country you are visiting and then rent a car to get around. You can then stay in hotels or apartments along the way. But you might decide that you want to save money and have a bit more freedom by taking a caravan or campervan instead. The question is, which one is best? They both have their pros and cons so ultimately it comes down to personal preference. To help you make your decision, here are some of the benefits of each option.

Caravans

The best thing about a caravan compared with a campervan is the price. Campervans can be very expensive, and you can always find a range of caravans for sale at a much lower price. If you are willing to invest in an affordable caravan, you’ve got it for future trips too. However, if you go with a campervan, you will end up spending more and you will probably only hire it. Just keep in mind that you will still need another vehicle to tow it.

Caravans also have more space than a campervan of a similar size. You don’t need space for the cab and engine in a caravan, so you get more living space and sleeping areas. There are, of course, much larger campervans available, which are more luxurious, but they come at a premium.

Campervans

One of the biggest benefits of campervans is that they’re easier than a caravan. When you arrive on site, you just need to park up and you’re ready to go. With a caravan, on the other hand, you need to find a suitable spot that is large enough for the caravan and your car. You then need to unhitch your caravan and make sure that it’s stable.

Campervans also tend to have a larger garage space, so if you want to take bikes and lots of other equipment with you, it will be easier.

However, there are some big drawbacks to campervans, especially very large ones. They’re a lot more expensive and they are very difficult to drive if you are only used to a normal-sized car. It’s even more difficult if you are in a new country and you don’t really know the rules of the road that well.

Overall, caravans are the best option for most people. They are much cheaper to rent and buy, and you usually have more space inside. You’ll also be driving a standard car, so even though you have to account for the caravan on the back, you will still find it more comfortable than driving a big camper. However, campervans may be better if you can afford a large one and you prioritise ease of use and garage space.
