We all have dreams. Yet, not everyone’s dreams will look the same. And that’s okay. It’s okay to realise that what you want is different to the norm. While everyone you know is buying a home and starting a family, it doesn’t mean that you have to do the same too – if that’s not really what you want. Instead, you need to make sure that you’re thinking about what you want out of life – and what the ‘perfect’ vision of a lifestyle looks like to you. Because this can be very different to what some people in your life may expect of you. BUT, if you’re staying true to what you want, then you need to go for it.
To some people, that dream is to travel. It’s to explore the world, see as much culture and meet as many people as they can, AND have a job that allows them to do that. Yet, it can seem like a pipe dream. Like something you’ve always wanted to do and feel as if you can’t – for whatever reason. But it is time for you to realise that it’s all in your mind. And if you want to be able to travel the world and work at the same time. You can. Here’s how you’re going to do it.
Understand the lifestyle
Now, before you attempt to make this work or just decide that you’re going to quit your job and travel, you need to be able to understand what the lifestyle is really like. Because it’s not necessarily as glamorous as you may think it is. Sure, travel boosts your creativity – but it’s also tiring. So make sure that you’re aware you may still have the same work pressures as you would have at home – but just on the road!
Know where your strengths lie
When you’re sure that this is what you want, it’s time to think about the kind of remote work that you want to do. Or that will suit you. Because you may find that you’d make a great freelance writer or a consultant or a coach. But it’s important for you to work out what strengths you have and how you can use them to create a successful remote business.
Top them up
Sometimes, you need to take a step on from that. Because it’s not always as straightforward as having all of the strengths and skills already. Sometimes, you need to identify your weaknesses and look to improve on them. For this, it could be to do your MSC business management online or it may be a small vocational course. Either way, if you think you need to top your skills up, it’s important to do this next.
Decide what you’re going to do
Now, you need to make that decision. Hopefully, by now, you will already know. Because you’ve considered your skills and you’ve worked out what kind of service you might be able to offer. But you need to firm that up. Make sure that you know you can make it work – no matter what the ‘it’ is. And then, it’s time to get started.
Build up interest
But, before you dive on in and travel the world, you will want to make sure that you’re able to build up interest in the product that you’re going to launch. Think about exactly how you can do this. From creating social media accounts and looking to build a tribe, to starting an email list and engaging an audience that way, it’s essential for you to get interest in what you’re doing, to make sure you have a market for what you want to sell.
Create a portfolio
At the same time, you need to make sure that you have some kind of portfolio in place. Really start to think about the work you need to have to land your client. Whether it’s freelance writing or a testimonial saying how much you helped someone. Really start to think about what you need to do to GET the portfolio together. Sometimes, you need to be able to do the work for free, to build up your portfolio before you can get paid.
Build a client base
And then you should be ready to think about booking your first client. As scary as this step may seem, you need to make sure that you’re actively looking to build a client base. Because unless you do this, you will find it impossible to be able to work remotely. Your business needs to be established and doing well BEFORE you travel. So it’s time to work on getting your first client and starting to build more income.
Start to save
Now that you know that the business side of things is working out, the next thing you need to be able to do here, is save. And this is essential. You need to have money behind you for two reasons. The first is so that you can afford to travel the world in the first place. But then secondly, so that you have a safety net behind you when you do start to be self-employed full-time, just in case you need it.
Take a little trip
Next up, you’re going to want to test the waters a little bit. This is to see if you’re really ready to do this – AND that you like it! So book a weekend trip, take time off of work, BUT do your own work while you’re away. Because this is essentially what you’ll be doing. It’s important for you to get a sense of what it’s like to work and travel, before you quit your job.
Learn how to manage your time
Now that you’ve done that working trip, and you’ve tested the water a little, you may realise that you need to be able to work on your time management a bit more. Because when it comes to being able to juggle work and travel, planning is just so important. And, you may now realise that you need to be able to plan ahead and schedule work as much as you can, so that you can travel from place to place.
Do your research
At the same time, you will want to make sure that you’re researching the different locations you travel to well. Because you’ll need to be able to access Wi-Fi or working facilities, so it’s best to iron this all out ahead of time.
Take the leap
Finally, when you KNOW that you’re ready (or a tiny bit before), you’re going to want to take the leap. Quit your job. Book a flight. Go full-time from home first. Just make something happen. Yes, this is scary – but it is the last step you need to take when you’re serious about working remotely and travelling full-time. And you only have to look how far you’ve already come to know that you can do it.
And there you have it. At first, you may feel as if the people you see online, or that the success stories you read, are all a myth. Or that they are just too far away from your reality. But they needn’t be. Because you will find that, if you are to follow these steps, have the confidence to put yourself out there, and really aim to make this work – it will.
So what are you waiting for? Take that first step, start saving, and let the world be your oyster!
