Esplanade Zagreb Hotel

Hotel in Zagreb

5-Star Luxury Hotel

I have known Hotel Esplanade both as a local and as a tourist and both experiences are equally pleasant.

Zagreb locals have grown up with this elegant venue that is perhaps the most well known hotel in town. It is here they host important business meetings in the mornings or romantic encounters in the evenings, when the piano music and dimmed lights make the hotel’s bar pleasant and warm. The hotel’s Emerald Hall is a favourite venue for weddings and luxurious dinner parties and the grand terrace hosts lavish corporate gatherings.

Visitors to the city will hardly find any other hotel that has it all: perfect location, lovely rooms, wonderful décor, historical significance and professional staff.

This was my first stay in the hotel and I was delighted by the experience: like a time machine, the lobby reminds one of past times when Orient Express travellers would stay at the Esplanade to rest from their long journeys.

The train station is a few steps away and when Hotel Esplanade was built in 1925 its main purpose was to accommodate the travellers of the Orient Express. The hotel has been recently renovated and has a modern feel to it, but luckily the Art Deco style has successfully been maintained. It has a look of understated glamour, with elegant furniture and lavish chandeliers.

The room I was staying in was spacious and pleasant, with elegant furnishings and a superb bathroom. The décor is most pleasant and the room is well equipped and there is free Wi-Fi. It overlooks a variety of historical buildings including the town’s main train station. It is nice to observe the busy city from the calm and quiet room. Everything worth seeing in Croatia’s capital is a few minutes walk away, a nice walk too, through one of the city’s nicest parks that leads you the main square and the Bogoviceva Street – the ultimate promenade where you can walk, drink, eat or simply enjoy people watching as locals do on a Saturday morning. You are very close to the open food market which is worth visiting, with its lively palette of organic food. Many museums and galleries are a short walk from the hotel as are boutiques, theatres and cafés which have almost an equal role in the cultural life of the city as traditional cultural venues.

The hotel is leaning on the botanical garden, an unexpected oasis among the busy streets of the city centre. In the Spring and Summer months it is well worth taking a walk there followed by a coffee and cake on the hotel’s terrace. If you feel like staying in the hotel in the evening, you won’t be disappointed by its restaurant – it is, in fact, one of the best restaurants in town and features French cuisine with a Croatian twist. The breakfast in Esplanade is always a nice experience as is the SPA, which is one of the city’s favourites.

If you can, visit Zagreb in Spring, when its trees dress up in lavish gowns as do the locals whose life moves to the many bars and cafés. You will enjoy the lively atmosphere of timeless central European gatherings. If you find yourself here in winter months you will enjoy the warmth of delicious chestnuts and a walk in the Zrinjevac Park covered in snow. Either way, staying in Hotel Esplanade will enhance your experience and will make sure your Zagreb memory gets the adjectives it deserves: elegant, pleasant and very lovely.
