Veladora Rancho Valencia

Restaurant in San Diego

Farm to Table Restaurant

Dining at Rancho Valencia is a tribute to the Farm to Table trend we all pray is here for good.  If these restaurants have anything to do with it, it’s a sure thing.

While The Pony Room and Veladora are the resort’s restaurants, amongst its layers of laurels, Rancho Valencia is touted for its Tequila Tastings. My husband spent an hour touring his taste buds around a celebrated spirit, assessing aromas and flavours, temperature and spice, balance and persistence.  A great party prop to have at the ready.

We met him fireside; to dine al fresco outside The Pony Room (in January, it’s unfair, and we know that) overlooking the sprawling greens beneath towering palms.  Gorgeous burgers, fish tacos, and flatbreads, all within a vibrant, verdant nook lit up by firepits and a full moon.  A dip in our private Jacuzzi would nightcap our evening in a way that sung of the day to come.

Our final evening we dined at Veladora, one of two tributes to the art of farm to table fare.  Get anything involving lobster.  Risotto to slow poached Maine lobster salad; it’s a treat worth treating yourself to when it’s prepared this properly.  As are the lemon soufflé pancakes come morning.  Or the feather light feta in the egg white frittata soufflé.  Though my mother would argue the Crab Benedict outdid them all.

Both restaurants celebrate Executive Chef Eric Balick’s flair for featuring flowers and herbs grown right on the property.  Expect beauty in presentation and playfulness with fragrance and flavor.  And an olive oil cake that won’t quit.
