The National

Restaurant in New York

Grand Café

A great place for a business breakfast or late night meal.

I am always on the hunt for a good breakfast place in New York City so I can maximise my time in the city with breakfast meetings.  The National meets the grade for me.  You can be as formal or informal as you like here, so it is a great multi-purpose restaurant and bar that has a distinctive French café feel with its wooden and tiled floors, European style tables and chairs and leather banquettes.

I had an excellent breakfast on a recent visit to the city and then more recently used it for both breakfast and drinks in the evening.  In between these two dates The New York Times gave The National a great review.

My meeting was a little later at 9am so it was not busy, although I understand it is busy earlier in the morning.  They serve good coffee, and being a coffee snob I was delighted at my double espresso as I am not too communicative before at least one double first thing in the morning.  If you are a tea drinker they offer a nice range of 8 types of tea from white ginger with pomegranate to Chamomile Lavender herbal.

It was a cold morning with a sprinkling of snow on Central Park, so I went for the hot oatmeal with dried fruits and hazelnuts and a glass of fresh orange juice to wash it down.  Delicious!  There are other healthy options such as homemade Granola, Greek yoghurt and Quince Pomegranate and fresh fruit salad.  If you want to be really American why not have Beef Hash or Toasted Bagel with Gravlax, cream cheese, red onion and cucumber, otherwise they have omelettes, steak and egg, French toast as well as all kinds of eggs done any way you want.  Dishes range from around $8 to $15.

I did have a quick peek at the lunch and dinner menu and they have plenty to choose from.  Whether you fancy a light salad, snack ‘from the Pantry’, sandwich or steak.  You won’t be disappointed with the dessert selection either.  I counted ten in total all at around $10 from roasted apple cheesecake to a nice cheese board.

If you just want to stop by for a cocktail, they have a nice bar with wooden stools and it is really buzzing in the evenings and has become very popular with New Yorkers.

The National is open daily from 7:00am to 1:00am and they serve Brunch at the weekend.
