The View Lugano

Hotel in Lugano

5-Star Boutique Hotel & Spa

I arrived for the soft opening of the new, 5 Star  The View Lugano hotel but there was nothing soft about it, this was hardcore luxury from the off.

Greeted in the lower reception area by name, our bags were whisked quickly away and we proceeded by lift to check in, where a team of multi-lingual front of house staff took care of the process in a matter of minutes.  Escorted by our floor butler and re-united with our baggage, we were given a brief tour of our room.  Wow! A king size bed faces the huge terrace and on each side of it there is a panel (at perfect arm’s length) that allows either one of you to open and close the blinds and turn on and off an array of different lighting.  Behind the bed is an open plan bathroom with a sumptuous free-standing bath from which you can also gaze out upon the magnificent view.  A massive wide screen TV with channels in most European languages can be swung out manually, should you prefer to watch in bed rather than from the ample, lush leather sofa (it returns, flush to the wall, as soon as you turn it off should that be bothering you but if it does, then you’ve come to the right place because I defy anyone not to be completely relaxed in this wonderful environment).

There is a separate shower kitted out with a range of Jo Malone products and a toilet, both with movement sensored lighting. Each room has its own iPad, mini bar, espresso machine and safe.  This is contemporary luxury at its height with bespoke, wonderful linen, duck down duvets and perfect pillows.  Every detail has been carefully thought out and the view.  The view is quite spectacular hence its name, The View Lugano.

High up and looking down on Lake Lugano with mountains straight across, it is arguable whether the view is better at night or during the day or whether it’s better from the bed or from the bath or indeed the terraced balcony.  These are the kind of upper class dilemmas that I’m happy to deal with.  The service is magnificent and some of the best I’ve experienced anywhere in the world.  Nothing is too much trouble.  On realising that I had taken my bulky room key from the hotel I’d stayed at in Milan, I was speedily relieved of it and the whole matter disappeared.  There is a fleet of smart cars waiting in the garage for the exclusive use of guests and for those a little braver, half a dozen motorised bicycles.

The luxurious spa has a salt room, an indoor pool on the 3rd floor with relaxing beds (and, yes you guessed an amazing view), single sex saunas with cool pools and a multi-gym plus treatment rooms.

Michelin starred chef Tommaso Arrigoni of Milan has opened his new restaurant at The View Lugano.  We had a beautiful four course ‘taster menu’ for lunch.  Everything you’d expect from one of Italy’s great chefs and the service was as exquisite as the food. 110 Euros a head without wine...it was an early lunch.
