Sofitel London St James
Hotel in London
5-Star Hotel
This contemporary and luxury high tech hotel is situated in a superb part of London, ideally located for getting around the city.
All 184 rooms are extremely well soundproofed so you will not hear traffic noise even if your room overlooks the front of the hotel. Entry level Classic rooms start at 245 sq ft (23 sq m) and Superior rooms at 277 sq ft (26 sq m) and face the inside of the building, so you won’t get a view, but they are a good size for a London hotel and the lower floors enjoy higher ceilings. All rooms have a flat screen TV, Roberts digital radio, CD player and iPod docking station as well as plenty of closet space. Wi-Fi is free of charge in both the bedrooms and all other public areas of the hotel for up to 100 MB of download. Luxury Rooms are much larger at 341 sq ft (32 sq m) and have a king size bed or two singles. The lovely black and white marble bathrooms have Hermes amenities and 95% have a separate walk in shower.
All Executive Suites are named after famous people from the world of British Theatre and are generous in size at 380 sq ft (35 sq m). Bathrooms are much larger and the separate living room area is very colourful and warm. The John Gielgud Suite has a spacious separate lounge, comfortable green sofa, large Samsung flat screen television and keyboard for using the Internet. There is a beautiful green topped writing desk should you have to work. I adore the wallpaper which is covered in clocks. I am told the designer wants to remind us that this used to be a bank. I was surprised just how quiet and tranquil the rooms are given the suite is located on the corner of Pall Mall and Waterloo Place. The adjoining room with its heavenly king size My Bed (with its 7 different layers) has a small reading chair. There is plenty of room to hang all your clothes in the green faced wardrobe and the large windows let in lots of natural light. A double door leads into a big black and white marbled bathroom with its thick black granite sink surface and wooden base and shelf underneath for all your personal belongings. The lighting is very good and there is a standalone shower and deep bath in which to enjoy a nice soak.
I love the unusually thick front doors that lead in to the calm corridors and the fact that if you put the “Do not disturb” red light on, the door bell does not ring!
The brand new Royal Suite (refurbished March 2011) draws its inspiration from Edward VII and is incredibly tranquil and sumptuous yet ultra modern. The black marble entrance hall opens up via a large sliding door in to spacious living room with its large Samsung flat screen television, fabulous speaker system, Blue ray Disc player and tiny keyboard for accessing the Internet. The bedroom is flash, opulent with colours taken from their Spa – pink, brown and beige. The large bathroom with a high ceiling is wonderful with twin sinks in the black granite surface and cupboards underneath as well as a big shelf. It is decorated with oatmeal coloured marble half way up the wall and green walls. The wall behind the sink is all mirrored offering excellent lighting. The toilet and bidet are behind double doors. You really can indulge your every luxury here! As second sliding door reveals a fully equipped kitchen with black granite work surfaces and wooden fittings. There is a big dining table with four solid metal legs that seats eight. Both sliding doors have wonderful paintings on.
The hotel and rooms have a mix of English and French styling, with some rooms being more corporate in style whilst others are more homely. Pictures of French and English landscapes hang in each room. It is noticeable that the hotel and rooms are in particularly good condition, due to the fact that they employ full-time decorators.
The well equipped gym has Technogym equipment with USB ports, the latest techy treadmill, Jacuzzi shower and vertical garden to give that outdoor feeling when you are working out! As soon as you walk into the heavenly Sofitel So SpPA there is a wonderful sense of tranquillity with an Asian feel.
I love the new and chic St James Bar with its Coco Chanel ambience, which is turning out to be a very popular destination bar for cocktails after work. The Balcon opened at the same time and oozes quality and superb French British cusine combined with its very own Charcuterie and Champagne Table. Afternoon Tea is served in the bright and delightful Rose Lounge whilst listening to gentle music from the live harp.

Extremely friendly staff welcome you as soon as you walk in to the warm lobby. When walking around the hotel staff greet you initially in French before reverting to English, which is a nice touch.
