The Athenaeum

Hotel in London

5-Star Luxury Hotel

I must have walked past The Athenaeum Hotel more times than I can remember, thinking I really must pay it a visit sometime as I have heard good things about it.

Well I finally did pay it a visit one recent Friday evening to attend a fun Whisky Social event in their cosy restaurant and stayed overnight, enjoying a leisurely Saturday breakfast and lazy morning in London.

On stepping into the hotel, I was greeted by the doorman Jim, who has been working at The Athenaeum for some 22 years.  The lobby area is warm and inviting and having checked in I was shown up to my Park View Room on the ninth floor with its panoramic views over Green Park.  And because it was winter and there were no leaves on the trees, I could almost see to Buckingham Palace.  I was also greeted in my room by Arthur, the Athenaeum’s cuddly teddy bear!  Every room has one and you can even take one home for a very modest price £8.

The room, whilst not large, had a warm cosy feel to it with its orange upholstery and brown overtones.  There was a reasonable sized leather topped desk, free Wi-Fi and Bose iPod dock.  Being a coffee fan I was delighted to see that every room is equipped with a Nespresso© machine and if there is a particular flavour you prefer, the hotel will bring it up to you.  Another nice touch is the complimentary soft drinks in the minibar.  The bed was extremely comfortable and the good double glazing kept the majority of the street noise from Piccadilly below at bay.

Although the grey marble bathroom, equipped with a powerful shower over the bath, was on the small side, it was immaculately clean and you can pamper yourself with the lovely ESPA Bergamot Jasmine with a hint of Cedarwood toiletries and fluffy towels that were folded neatly over the heated towel rail.

I also managed to have a peak at a few other room types including a Superior and Deluxe room facing towards Mayfair and a large Green Park Suite, which comes either in open plan or with a partitioned bedroom.  The bathrooms are rather gorgeous too.  The modern styled Penthouse up on the 10th floor with its impressive views over Green Park and London has wooden flooring and can be made into either a two or three bedroom suite and has a much more modern décor, quite different in style to the other guestrooms.  The freezer with complimentary Ben & Jerry’s ice cream will no doubt keep the kids happy!

The Athenaeum is a family friendly hotel with interconnecting rooms and rollaway beds available.  They even have a kids’ concierge as well as toys, bicycles and special food so they can go feed the ducks in the park.  But if you fancy your own apartment, the hotel has 18 of their very own with all the amenities of the hotel just a few steps away.

As well as an excellent restaurant, which served a fabulous breakfast the next morning, The Athenaeum has a really warm and inviting bar where they stock over 270 whiskeys.  I particularly like the Garden Room which serves a great Afternoon Tea with three sittings each day as it’s so popular at 12:30pm, 3:00pm and 5:30pm.

There is a small spa down in the basement area with one double treatment room offering a range of treatments using Elemis and Ren products, from facials and anti-aging treatments to body scrubs and Swedish massages.  They also have two hot tubs and a fitness area with Technogym cardio equipment, where I managed to get a quick workout before dinner.

So all the good things I heard about The Athenaeum are well justified and what really stands out for me are the delightfully friendly staff who make you feel so welcome, many of whom have been working here for a long time, which speaks volumes.
