Hotel in Istria
5-Star Design Hotel
Croatia’s first and only member of Design Hotels™, Hotel Lone was designed as a contemporary expression of the classic Croatian resort hotel from the 1970s, with horizontal lines, sea-facing terraces and large lobbies.
Owned by hotel developer Maistra Inc., Hotel Lone is the largest Greenfield investment in Croatian tourism in recent years, it has put the quaint and charming seaside town of Rovinj on the tourism map and boy is this hotel impressive.
With the sea only 150 metres away, the 5-star Hotel Lone has been built to imitate a ship with its sleek silhouette and inside this is evident by the enormous atrium topped with a glass ceiling to flood the hotel with the natural Croatian sunshine. This part of Croatia gets sunshine on average for at least 134 days of the year, so there’s plenty to go round.
Inside there are 248 rooms, each set of rooms uniquely designed and exquisite in their own way. The Jazz Rooms, despite not being the priciest in the hotel, are definitely a favourite with huge glass doors leading to a private infinity pool and Jacuzzi sunk into the balcony. There are also 11 Suites and one Presidential Suite, with all 248 rooms in the hotel overlooking the sea or Golden Cape Forest Park.
The three restaurants inside Hotel Lone each boast their own vibe with the à la carte ‘L’ having head chef Priska Thuring behind the hobs and her original modern take on classic cooking has really been turning heads. The spicy seafood Thai soup was a favourite – an oyster is served up on a plate alongside the soup in teapot and a teabag of spices, allowing you to control the intensity of the flavours. This is experience dining at its best.
The vast 1,700 square meter Wellness & Spa centre is an oasis of relaxation complete with indoor pools, fully equipped gym, Jacuzzi, steam rooms, saunas and a relaxation lounge boasting a juice bar that serves up post-work out revitalising drinks. If a massage is more your thing, the hour-long signature Lone Massage is the one to book in for. This incredible massage is designed to connect you with the natural beauty of Istria; the oils are locally sourced and scented and the sounds of the forest create the soundtrack.
Outside is a brand new outdoor pool area, designed by Hotel Lone’s architects, 3LHD. The pool area is equipped with sunbathing terraces, a restaurant serving tasty light bites and a pool bar. Despite the beauty inside the hotel (try to drag yourself away from that sea-view balcony) you’ll be drawn to go exploring the town due to Hotel Lone’s idyllic location 5 minutes along from Rovinj’s harbour. The old town of Rovinj is steeped in history and with its cobbled alleyways, glistening harbour and restaurants such as Kantinon serving up the freshest seafood you’ll ever eat; it’s well worth spending a day strolling around town.
If you’re looking to go a little further afield, Hotel Lone offers a free bike hire service and there really is no better way to explore the nearby forest and waterfront. Take a leisurely cycle out of the hotel and you can follow the water through the woodlands to the edge of the town – the views are breathtaking and there are plenty of stop-offs for an afternoon apperitivo along the way. Being so close to Italy, Rovinj has adopted many Italian traditions without sacrificing its authentic Croatian vibe, so come 5:00pm it has to be an Aperol Spritz. Absolute perfection.
