A Room in the West End
Restaurant in Edinburgh
Scottish Bistro Restaurant
A room underneath a pub might not be your first port of call for a quality lunch. In fact, it might seem like the sort of place to avoid altogether.
But you would be missing out if you didn’t head down the steps in Teuchars to A Room in the West End, a cosy dining room tucked away on William Street in the heart of Edinburgh’s trendy West End.
Because here you’ll find a warm welcome – and one of the best steaks I’ve had in Scotland.
We ate here on a Friday, surrounded by local office workers, and zoned in immediately on the “favourites” menu, where a char grilled 10oz Borders sirloin steak served with grilled Portobello mushrooms, haggis, spiced wedges and balsamic tomato relish jumped off the page at me.
Several of my favourite words in one place – steak, mushroom, spiced, balsamic, tomato – and I was sold. I probably shouldn’t have started with the Dunsyre blue, aubergine, courgette and red pepper tartlet, leaving room instead for the steak, but it was delicious nonetheless and showed off this fab Lanarkshire cheese perfectly.
And then came the steak. Vast and served on a wooden board, it was instantly appealing. Cooked to perfection, with just the right texture and amount of pinkness, it melted in the mouth, and the haggis gave it a kick that added a real richness. The spiced wedges were a bridge too far for my appetite but stood up well to the flavours of the meat and the balsamic tomato relish was one of those sauces you end up scraping every last drop of from the pot.
There was no room for dessert (although the warm orange and poppy seed sponge sounded tempting) so we sat with a coffee and digested it all, agreeing that we would be back.
