DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh City Centre
Hotel in Edinburgh
Edinburgh Castle dominates Scotland’s capital, and on my most recent stay, it managed to dominate my hotel room too.
Deluxe rooms and suites at the new DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh City Centre all have castle views – and my room also had a comfy armchair in which to sit and gaze at it.
This we did for hours, between popping out to visit the castle (naturally), strolling the Royal Mile and enjoying the restaurants and bars of the West End. Because perhaps the best thing about this hotel is its location, right in the heart of the city. Everywhere is within easy walking distance and so we could use our room as a base, returning between shopping and sightseeing, dinner and drinks.
The hotel is also home to Bread Street Brasserie and so we didn’t even need to leave to get dinner, dining instead just downstairs from our room, tucking into juicy steaks, washed down with a cab sav, before returning upstairs to the hotel’s best kept secret – the SkyBar.
This is located in the Penthouse space, normally hired out for events but on the first Thursday of the month, becoming a bar that is open to everyone. Here we found it was best to focus on the view – and that Castle again – the sparse interior and higgledy piggledy furniture detracting somewhat from the ambience. It would be better for events, with decorations and filled with people.
Back in the room we enjoyed the bathtub but not the bad lighting (it was very gloomy by the wardrobe, where the kettle has been hidden in the darkness), the workspace but not the charge for Wi-Fi, the armchair but not the lack of a bathrobe and overall agreed that once a few teething troubles are ironed out, this will be a truly great hotel for an Edinburgh city break.
