Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik
Hotel in Dubrovnik
The first thing you notice at the Hotel Excelsior is the noise. It follows you from the very moment you enter your room and will instantly draw you towards the balcony.
It is there where you will find that it is in fact the sea that was making this wonderfully romantic noise. It is there as well you will discover its proximity. But the sea, in all its untouched beauty of the Adriatic, won’t manage to hold your attention for too long. For when you take your gaze away from the horizon your will find golden stones floating on the water, a timeless scene, a dream town. You will find Dubrovnik.
A visitor’s first reaction to this scene can only be astonishment. It has been the case for an entire century for it is this year that Hotel Excelsior celebrates its 100th anniversary. From its founding day it has enjoyed the company of many famous guests, from Queen Elizabeth II to Elizabeth Taylor, from statesmen to Roger Moore. Today, Hotel Excelsior is a favourite for a variety of travellers: couples on a romantic getaway, families, politicians and businessmen attending one of Dubrovnik’s many conferences.
It is no wonder that the hotel has survived for a hundred years, witnessing a turbulent history of the country it belongs to. From the very balcony I was standing on, international war reporters were filming the horrid bombing of Dubrovnik in 1991 when the Serbian aggressor tried to erase the glorious history of one of the jewels of European history, culture and nobility. Yet it was also the place that first reopened after the war hence symbolizing its Phoenix-like awakening of the UNESCO protected Dubrovnik. Quite rightly so for there are few places with so little faults.
Start your day with breakfast seasoned with a splendid view; continue with the beach or a walk in the old town, not more than ten minutes away. There is no outdoor swimming pool in the hotel but if you are there in the period between May and November enjoy a swim in one of the cleanest parts of the Mediterranean. The staff are friendly and the service impeccable. The hotel has a restaurant on the beach that in the evening becomes a setting for a romantic dinner with, again, an exceptional view of the old town embraced by the city walls, now sparkling under the starry nights. The hotel hosts a variety of events including jazz nights and other music performances by Croatian and international performers.
The decoration of Hotel Excelsior is simple yet pleasant with a big emphasis on art; you will find a well chosen selection of paintings in the rooms and corridors. It won’t be easy to leave its spectacular view, pleasant feel and location. And it will be unbearable to leave behind that noise, the whisper of the sea that was so pleasantly lullabying you to sleep and welcoming you into the morning.
