“I wonder if they stayed in this exact hotel room” I mused, while looking out over the stunning scenery of the Mougins Valley and pre-alps from my private balcony. I’d just been to dinner with owner of Le Mas Candille Mark Silver, who told me Hollywood royalty had been to stay after a jaunt at the Cannes Film Festival.
A 5-star hotel and spa fit for celebrities and those who appreciate the finer things in life, this gorgeous and lovingly restored 18th century farmhouse occupies 8 acres of land and nestles itself amongst olive groves and cypress trees with a stunning backdrop.
There’s three separate living spaces to choose from including ‘Le Mas’ which has elegant, Provencal style bedrooms in the main farmhouse; ‘La Bastide’ which boasts unique décor in each individually designed room, with sought after items from around the world... and ‘La Villa Candille’ – spacious suites with floor to ceiling windows, terraces and panoramic views.
This charming hotel also has a Michelin starred restaurant, 3 pools, 2 Jacuzzis and the first Shieseido spa in Europe which I guarantee will relax and revive after a long day spent exploring the nearby Mougins, Grasse and Cannes.
I stayed in one of the ‘La Bastide’ rooms – the centrepiece, most definitely the enormous four poster bed. Combining traditional andcontemporary pieces of furniture, along with a stunning bathroom complete with huge tub and walk in shower, meant the room retained a unique sense of French charm without compromising on the mod cons.
Breakfast is plentiful and delicious, as in lunch and dinner! There are two restaurants – ‘La Pergola’ which opens in summer and is located at the stunning outdoor infinity edge pool, or in the main building and ‘Le Candille’ which allows spectacular views of the landscape – either way, it’s a win win situation. With new chef David Chauvac at the helm, the dishes are creative and ever so slightly experimental – every single dish we tried was a total delight. I was even lucky enough to experience the hustle and bustle of a true French market early morning, where Davide picked up his fresh and locally sourced ingredients for the day’s cooking. Think artichoke, fennel, beetroot and broccoli... scallops, langoustine and sea bream. Every dish meticulously thought out, beautifully presented and mouth-wateringly good.
If you’re there to relax and re-charge, then the wellness centre will deliver on every level. If the Jacuzzi, sauna, hydrotherapy pool, or peaceful infinity pool (with its outstanding views) doesn’t quite hit the spot, then a Shiseido massage most certainly will. This is a very different form of massage, as the traditional Oriental concepts of Shiseido work on balancing ‘Qi’ – a vital energy which runs through the body. The massage stimulates the body’s tsubo points and the use of warm woven towels placed on the skin at various intervals result in a relaxed state I’ve never experienced before.
Le Mas Candille is a hotel which delivers on every level, from its pleasant helpful staff, to the Molton Brown products in the bathroom and the lavender left on your pillow to help you sleep. For 5-star food, luxury and wellness, this tranquil retreat will find a real place in your heart.

The owner, Mark Silver, is British and wonderfully approachable should you need anything or have any problems at all during your stay. The hotel was winner of the Best Hotel Restaurant in Europe & the Mediterranean at the Condé Nast Johansens 2014 Awards.
Check the website for special package deals including golfing and romantic breaks. They offer an expansive wine list from €50 to €3,500 per bottle. Sample the ‘Flavours of the Day Menu’ for €62 per person including 2 glasses of wine.
