Restaurant in Copenhagen
Christian 4-tal is a wonderful hidden gem serving traditional Danish lunch at a reasonable price.
If you love open Danish sandwiches, Aquavit and Danish beer then look no further! This is one of my favourite little places to visit when I am in Copenhagen. I was taken here a number of years ago for a business lunch and have made it my “must go to” place each time I visit Copenhagen. I even found myself on Danish television a few years ago when they were filming a documentary in the restaurant on the owner, Annilil, who has made Chr. 4-tal into such a friendly and popular lunch spot.
The quality of the homemade dishes is excellent and portions are generous. Personally I love the open sandwiches (Smørrebrød) and their herring menu, with three herrings (different flavours) served with chopped egg, raw onions, capers and dill. I have also had the smoked salmon served on the most delicious homemade bread with scrambled eggs and chives. Friends have had the warm fillet of plaice with shrimps, caviar and homemade mayonnaise and loved it. If you’d rather have meat, they do a great beef tartar served with raw egg yolk and a warm Danish minced beef steak or roast beef on their fabulous bread instead of fish.
The homemade season herring dishes are very reasonably priced if you fancy a lighter lunch whilst the larger fish plates are excellent and substantial and include a starter and main course.
The restaurant even has complimentary Wi-Fi and I have often used it as my 'temporary office’ for an hour after lunch before heading to the airport to get my plane.
Please note that the restaurant is only open for lunch, from 11am until 5pm Monday through Saturday, so a late lunch is possible.
