The Peninsula Chicago

Hotel in Chicago

5-Star / AAA Five Diamond Hotel

Asian graciousness meets Midwestern hospitality at The Peninsula Chicago, which has a prime location on the Magnificent Mile.

Chinese Guardian Lions flank the entrance in the spirit of keeping all who enter safe. Sometimes they wear Chicago sport team jerseys. When The Peninsula Paris opened in 2014, berets were suggested.  The hotel’s two MINI Coopers are decorated with bunny ears for Easter and rooftop spiders for Halloween. Sometimes the hotel mascot, Peter Bear, dressed as a Peninsula page is a passenger. If a MINI is not available, or you prefer a more decorous vehicle, the doorman will call for the BMW house car. Taxi is a vehicle of last resort and “bus” is not in the Peninsula lexicon.

From the moment you step across the threshold you know this is no ordinary hotel. It has a sense of humor – and a sense of style. The lobby is several floors up and a stroll down a majestic hall with soft, golden tones and windows displaying select designer goods. The receptionist has done a bit of homework so guests’ needs are anticipated before they can be articulated.  A Peninsula page is available to run pesky errands and walk dogs – and deliver cookies to the kids. Wi-Fi is free.

Room categories are Superior, Deluxe, and Grand Deluxe. All have marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, inset televisions, and Oscar de la Renta toiletries. Lighting and temperature are controlled from a bedside panel. The Executive and Junior Suites have one lavish bathroom while the deluxe and grand deluxe suites also have a powder room. The Grand Suite features a marble reception area, two bedrooms, two marble bathrooms and a powder room, two dressing rooms and a dining room seating six. The Peninsula Suite, on the top floor, has every amenity including a baby grand piano, a wrap-around terrace overlooking Lake Michigan, and an outdoor whirlpool tub.

The hotel has a half-Olympic size indoor pool with glass walls for spectacular city views and padded lounge chairs. The on-site spa has a wide range of treatments including signature experiences unique to the Peninsula and inspired by the hotel group’s Asian roots.

Dining at The Peninsula Chicago is exceptional with three award-winning restaurants, each serving outstanding cuisine.  From classic European fare at Pierrot Gourmet to the Shanghai Terrraces’ acclaimed Chinese choices and The Lobby’s international menu, the Peninsula is one of Chicago’s most refined places to dine in intimate comfort.

The Peninsula Academy provides in-depth learning in luxury. The Academy’s river tour of Chicago’s iconic buildings and historic architectural landmarks is on a private, 48-foot yacht. Art lovers appreciate private tours of a favorite collection at the Art Institute by the curator in charge of the collection. Elegant picnics beside the lake are arranged and served by a Peninsula page and butler.

Young firefighters in training are transported to a Chicago fire station in a MINI Cooper for a tour of the station and a fire safety lesson. The boys return to the hotel in their firemen uniforms and make fire safety inspections of the hotel.  For young ladies, the Princess for a Day experience includes an incognito arrival, a staff of attendants for hair styling and makeup and a shopping spree in a horse-drawn pumpkin-shaped carriage. Upon her red-carpet return, she is greeted by her subjects, the staff, and her prince presents her with glass slippers.
