Sofitel Berlin Gendarmenmarkt

Hotel in Berlin

5-Star Luxury Boutique Hotel

I was somewhat disappointed with the entrance to the hotel. The Sofitel Berlin Gendarmenmarkt is hidden among the restaurants of Gendarmenmarkt, a charming square of Berlin’s city centre, and had I not been warned by the taxi driver I would have easily skipped it.

However, I will soon find out that there is a certain modesty and non-flashy style about the entire hotel, something I will grow to like.

This is a luxury boutique hotel with only 92 rooms, including suites. It is very quiet despite being in one of the busiest areas of the city. The atmosphere is calming, ideal for a business trip or a city break in Berlin. I stayed in a Superior Room, bright, modern and elegantly furnished, if a bit small. Its main feature is the view to the square, which is stunning.

I had a look at the suites and they are very nice, ideal for business travellers as the room can easily be transformed into a salon suitable for meetings.

I enjoyed my breakfast in the Atrium Café. It is a very bright space ideal to start the morning with a variety of food and a superb French breakfast selection. The hotel does not have its own restaurant but is next to a famous Austrian restaurant, Aigner. In warmer months guests can enjoy dining on the terrace overlooking the square, something that seems to be a popular thing to do among affluent Berliners.

Although a place of pleasant interior and professional staff, the best thing about the Sofitel Berlin Gendarmenmarkt is its location. Whether you wish to do sightseeing or shopping, you are in the best part of town. A short walk will take you everywhere you want to be, including the luxurious shops of Friedrischstrasse and the famous Checkpoint Charlie, what used to be one of the borders between East and West Berlin. The Branderburg Gate is a fifteen minute walk as is the Cathedral and all the major museums.

After a long day of sightseeing, it is most pleasant to rest in the hotel’s SPA. Even if you are not in the mood for a spa treatment you will enjoy the spectacular view on some of the nicest buildings in Berlin.

Another memorable feature of the hotel is its Delphinium conference room, perhaps the most innovative conference room I have ever seen. It shows that the Sofitel Berlin is mainly aimed at business travellers who will be positively surprised by the elegance, warmth and serenity of the hotel. All other guests will like it, too. It might not be the most memorable hotel experience I have had, but there is something settling about no surprises, as long as what prevails is good quality and elegance, certainly features of the Sofitel Berlin.
