Fivelements Puri Ahimsa

Hotel in Bali

5-Star Hotel Resort

After soaking in a fruit salad bath by a river at Fivelements Puri Ahimsa in Bali, your shower at home just won't feel quite the same.

I've bathed in hot springs before and had milk, rose petals and even electric baths but as I soak in a tub at Fivelements Puri Ahimsa it strikes me that this is my first fruit salad bath.

The resort is on the banks of the Ayung river in Mambal, a rural area in central Bali, Indonesia.

I'm not sure which bit of my bathing experience is the best. Is it the fact that I'm outside, my modesty protected only by the leaves on nearby trees? Or the fact that I can see and hear the river rushing metres below me? No, I decide, it's the scent of the mineral-rich sea salt, pandas leaves and fruit in the water – there must be at least a few sliced oranges, limes, ginger and lemongrass stalks bobbing around me.

My bath is part of Fivelement's two-hour Sakti ritual (£76 single, £135 couples) which begins at the resort's spa with a foot bath scented with sea salt, herbs, limes and flowers. A massage with coconut oil is next, followed by a scrub made with sea salt and lime.

By the time my treatment ends I'm no longer conscious, which is why it feels such a treat when I'm gently woken by my therapist who whispers that the bath outside my villa has already been run. I don't have to do a thing.

As night falls, I sink into the water and think life doesn't get much better than this. The staff at Fivelements Puri Ahimsa spa go out of their way to make each guest feel like a king. No wonder it won spa retreat of the year 2013, eco spa of the year 2012 and destination spa of the year 2011 at the Asia Spa Awards.

The resort is made up of just nine villas, so there are more staff than guests. Its layout means you might not even see another guest during your stay, as each villa has high walls and its own wooden humped bridge over a stream, while the resort itself is nestled within farmland. If you're looking for a private, romantic retreat, this is the place to come.
