Quinta Bonita

Hotel in Algarve

Luxury Boutique Hotel

Long favoured by émigré residents from Northern Europe and the high-flying international jet set, the sun-baked Algarve region of Portugal has a plethora of outstanding golf courses and large five-star spa and leisure resorts.

The charming family-run Quinta Bonita is every bit as luxurious as such grandiose locations but offers the bonus of a truly intimate ambience and the little personal touches that make a real difference. It’s more like staying at a wealthy friend’s home than a hotel.

Hosts Chantelle, Fraser and their personable team spare no effort in making guests welcome.

A seamless blend of traditional charm and modern amenities, the property is set in expansive and lovingly tended hillside gardens with expansive views to the fishing port of Lagos and the shimmering Atlantic Ocean beyond.

Each suite has its own private terrace or balcony and they feature super king size beds dressed in finest Egyptian cotton, while air-conditioning and under-floor heating ensure comfort even amid heatwaves or the rare cold snaps.

You can take a dip in the inviting pool, relax in the shade of a 400-year old olive tree with a book from the well-stocked library, indulge in the luxury of a massage or make use of the honesty bar, but chances are that while it’s almost irresistibly tempting to stay on site for the duration of your stay you’ll want to get out and about to discover what this delightful region has to offer.

For starters there’s a string of picturesque fishing villages that reach almost as far as the dramatically rugged and wind-swept Cape St. Vincent, whose lighthouse and imposing fort mark the most south westerly tip of mainland Europe.

Turn the corner and you’re on the glorious Silver Coast where there’s nothing but ocean between you and the Americas. It’s a haven for surfers as well as sunseekers, cliff walkers, anglers and seafood lovers.

Inland head for the unspoilt mountains and the elegant hill-top spa town of Caldas de Monchique and beguiling Silves, dominated by its Mediaeval castle.

Closer to base, visit the atmospheric weekly market in Lagos or get out on the greens and fairways of the highly rated Boavista golf course, just five minutes down the road.
