Val-d'Isère along with nearby Tignes forms part of the
"l'Espace Killy", said by some to be the "Most Beautiful Ski
Area in the World" with 300 km of ski slopes.
Val-d'Isère is located in the south east part of France in
the Savoie / Rhône-Alpes and is just 5 km from the border with Italy. The Face de Bellevarde was the famous area of
the men's downhill in the 1992 Winter Olympics and more recently in 2009 Val-d'Isère
hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
The Pissaillas Glacier offers good summer skiing but despite
its high altitude you will still find snow cannons placed on certain slopes in
the winter season. The lift system is
comprehensive and you tend to find that the lift lines are well policed with
little pushing and shoving. The pistes
are well groomed and there are gradients to suit all levels of ability
including good wide “motorway” pistes, and plenty of off-piste opportunities.
A free shuttle bus runs between Val d'Isère and Tignes and
the villages in the valley.
The closest airport is Lyon about a 3 hours coach ride away or Geneva 4 hours away.
Tignes offers similar skiing, with the Perce-Neige funicular lift going up
through one of the mountains to the Grande Motte glacier offering 20 km of runs and 12 ski lifts.
