Founded in 1682 // William Penn // Declaration of Independence // Birthplace of The Constitution // Liberty Bell // Population: 1.5million...
Located in the Northeast of the United States in the Delaware Valley, Philadelphia is in fact the largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the fifth largest city in the US population-wise.
Philadelphia is a city steeped in history, founded by William Penn back in 1682 and was the meeting place for the Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence back in 1776 and the US Constitution in 1787. It was also the original capital of the US before Washington DC.
Liquor Laws Pennsylvania has one of the strictest alcohol laws in the US, with the State operating the liquor stores in which you can only buy wine and spirits but no beer. A 6-pack or case of 24 beers for example, is only available in certain bars and a select number of stores. It is also forbidden to bring wine or beer back in to the State from neighbouring States.
Ground Transportation Philadelphia has a comprehensive public transport system SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transport Authority), but is also a very walkable city. The regional rail system works well and you can get pretty much anywhere within and out of the city. Whilst taxis are the most popular way to get around, the Subway (Septa) runs from north to south and from east to west. A one-way fare costs $2 and just $1.70 if you buy a book of 10 tickets (like the Paris Carnet). If you are going to be in the city for more than a few days you might want to consider purchasing a weekly pass from Septa which costs a reasonable $15.
Culture and Museums One of the biggest attractions for people visiting Philadelphia is the Liberty Bell which has around 2 million visitors a year. But the city is also rich in culture and has many museums.
