Locarno is located in the Swiss Canton of Ticino on the most northern part of the beautiful Lake Maggiore at the foot of the Swiss Alps and is in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland.

The town is known for its castles that were built in the Early Middle Ages, many of which were destroyed and now in ruins.

Climate
Locarno enjoys a wonderful 2,300 hours of sunshine a year and has the warmest climate in Switzerland.  May tends to be the wettest month of the year with average summer temperatures being around24° to 26°C (79°F). The winter sees the thermometer drop to around 6° or 7°C.

Astrovia Locarno
One of the slightly unusual things about Locarno is that it is home to a 1:1,000,000,000 scale model of our Solar System. You can follow the sun along a cycle path that runs along the River Maggia and Pluto 6 km away.
