Florence (Firenze in Italian) is the capital of Tuscany and is located on the River Arno.

It is famous for its architecture, art and culture and is a popular destination for both Italians and tourists with some 1.6 million visitors every year.  Fashion also plays an important role in the region’s history and is considered amongst the fashion capitals of the world.

Culture and Museums

You are spoilt for museums to visit with places such as the Uffizi Gallery, which is perhaps one of the finest art museums in the world and the Pitti PalaceThe Porcelain Museum in the Casino del Cavaliere has an amazing collection of porcelain.  The Carriages Museum houses some wonderful historical carriages.  Boboli Gardens is viewed by many as one of the most important Italian gardens.

Other monuments and churches worth visiting include Santa Maria del Fiore (The Duomo), Campanile and Bapistery.  Piazza della Signoria is the heart of the city and it’s also where you will find Bartolomeo Ammanati’s Fountain of Neptune.  The Medici Chapel is inside the church of San Lorenzo.

Florence is also home to many Villas including Villa Medici at Careggi, The Belvedere Fort and many more.  The city also has numerous Squares such as Piazza del Duomo, Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza della Signoria, to name just a few.

You will also find many historical Theatres in Florence and of course the city’s legendary art collection is well-known throughout the world.


Public transport in the city is made up of buses (ATAF), which are orange.  Tickets can be purchased from bars, tobacconists and newsagents (you will see ATAF stickers in the shop windows) as well as the ATAF booth in Piazza Stazione.  Be sure to validate your ticket at the ‘ticket validating’ machines.
