At 100 years old, Delray Beach remains a charming seaside resort, yet in the past fifteen years it has also grown into a sophisticated dining destination.

Delray Beach is located on the Atlantic Ocean in the county of Palm Beach, north of Boca Raton and south of Palm Beach. Delray’s hub is Atlantic Avenue, a main street filled with eclectic shops and restaurants. Among dining choices are the casual Boston’s featuring live music and a bar on the second floor with a view of the Ocean and The Office, a unique restaurant featuring the CEO Burger. Gourmet spots include: Cut 432 and Thirty Two East.

History

In 1894 William S. Linton, a Republican US Congressman for Saginaw, Michigan, bought a tract of land just west of the Orange Grove House of Refuge, and began selling plots in what he hoped would become a farming community.  In 1896 Henry Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railroad south from West Palm Beach to Miami, with a station at Linton.  Originally called Linton, the city later was named Delray from a city in Michigan.

An interesting fact is that pineapples became the primary crop of the area. This is reflected in the name of the present day quaint art section known as Pineapple Grove just off Atlantic Blvd.

The Weather

Sunny with warm breezes almost 365 days per year, it’s paradise!  The temperature ranges between 67 degrees and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hotels

From the Crane House B& B to the Colony Hotel and the Seagate on Atlantic to the lovely Marriott across from the Ocean, there are several options.

Fun in the Sun

There are two miles of public beach, with dog-friendly sections as well.  Parasailing and rowing are popular sports and rental shops for scuba and snorkling gear are located nearby.

Tennis at Delray Beach Tennis Center brings major internatonal tennis events and the Chris Evert/Bank of America Pro Celebrity tournament.

Delray Beach is renowed for its festivals, including the Delray Affair which will celebrate its 50year anniversary in 2012.  Featuring 800 exhibits, it is among the largest crafts and entertainment festivals in South Florida.  With many bars and live music, Jazz on the Avenue is also a popular event.
