Ayrshire is known as being one of the most agriculturally
rich areas in Scotland and of course home of the famous Ayrshire cattle.
Ayrshire shares with Dumfries and Galloway some of the most wonderfully
rugged Scottish hill country known as the Galloway Hills which lie to the west
of the A713 (Ayr to Castle Douglas road) and run south from the Loch Doon area
almost to the Solway Firth. To the east
of this route through the hills lie the Carsphairn and Scaur Hills which lie to
the south east of Dalmellington and south of New Cumnock. Glen Afton also runs deep into these hills.
Turnberry Castle, which dates from the 13th century or
earlier is a big part of the history, and is thought to have been the
birthplace of Robert the Bruce.
Glasgow Prestwick International Airport, serving Glasgow, is
located in Ayrshire and is famous for the fact that it is the only place in Britain
visited by Elvis Presley!
