700,000 Bicycles // 150 Canals // Van Gogh Museum // Schiphol Airport: 5 runways, 48 million passengers a year...

Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands.  Here are a few hints for getting around the city from our locals on the ground: Shivani Valk and Allard Walthuis.

The city is the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and 7 of the world's top 500 companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city.

Tipping Hints

For the waiters we would recommend giving a 10-15% tip and for taxis less (maybe a few Euros, so for example round up a €9.50 fare to €10) and be careful because less scrupulous ones will give you the site-seeing tour. Taxis are expensive in Amsterdam.

Transfer from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Centre

The cheapest way from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam is to go by train. This will cost you €3.90 for a single trip or €6.70 or a return ticket and takes 20 minutes. There is a train almost every 10 to 15 minutes. On arrival at Amsterdam central station you can take the tram, subway or bus to your hotel or if you want to live dangerously, take a taxi!

If you take a taxi from Schiphol to the centre of Amsterdam it will cost you about €40 and depending on the time of the day you can get stuck in traffic. The journey takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

Ground Transportation

Amsterdam has a good train, tram, bus and subway system.  Public transport is not expensive and there are a number of visitor travel pass options available. Train timetables can be found on the main website, which is also available in English.  For tram and bus information the GVB website has an English version with all the details.

Bike Rental

There are more bicycles in Amsterdam than any other city (over 700,000) and it is a good way to get around and cars have to give way to you!  There are several websites for Bike Rental. There is one right next to Central Station which is a good one and there is another on DAM Street, a 5 minute walk from Central Station.
