27 Oct 2011
Categories: Restaurants     Tags: Assaggetti, tapas, Haymarket, Italian, London, assaggini

I popped in to one of my favourite new London restaurants yesterday for lunch to find that the name had changed.  I thought I was going mad at first and had to look at the name twice.  Apparently another restaurant had complained that the name Assaggini was too similar to theirs, hence the hasty change.

Summer is back! London is basking in a late summer surge with temperatures around 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit).

As there was literally not a cloud in the sky I took the opportunity to do some photography on The Thames and get some close ups of the London Eye, which looked spectacular.  Have a look at my Photo Blog...

I enjoyed a pre-opening glass of champagne at Réunion, London’s newest Champagne and Cocktail Bar located in the newly refurbished Grosvenor Hotel in Victoria.

London Transport and the Olympic Games

Categories: Travel News     Tags: Buses, London, Olympics, Transport, Underground, Barclays, Bikes, Cycle

It was fun trying to get to Kensington High Street yesterday afternoon for a meeting.  I discovered that the District and Circle lines are closed until 27th August for upgrade work!  Apparently August is a quiet time.  You could have fooled me with the amount of tourists I saw looking totally confused faced with the closure.  The only alternative was to take a bus, and given that it was 30 degrees yesterday and London buses are not air conditioned, I arrived at my meeting late and hot!

I recently visited the newly refurbished Stafford Hotel in St James, London.   It is tucked away in a quiet Mews and is a hidden away little gem popular with American visitors.  The main house was in need of updating and I really like what they have done to freshen it up and give it a more modern feel.  At the same time they have opened up the old restaurant and lounge area to create a bright new restaurant.

I finally made it to Assaggini yesterday for lunch with a friend who also writes for Our Man On The Ground and has her own great Blog.  Juan, the very hospitable manager has put together a very professional and delightful team who looked after us extremely well.  We love the ambience which is fresh, clean and trendy.  This part of London around Haymarket and Lower Regent Street was crying out for some decent restaurants.

Cuckoo Club Mayfair

I visited the Cuckoo Club in London's Mayfair yesterday evening to do a review of their excellent restaurant.  It is very eclectic and international with a youngish crowd.  I think we may possibly have been the only Brits there last night.  The girls at the table behind us spoke only French and a well-known US actress arrived a little later and sat just across from us with her boyfriend and friends.

Terminal 5 at London’s Heathrow airport has been a huge improvement, almost like having a new airport (as long as you don’t see the other old terminals) and work is well underway on the new Terminal 2 replacement. However I read that yet more improvement work is being planned for both Heathrow and Gatwick with an investment of some £4 billion.

I read last week that New Englanders and New Yorkers are ready for spring.  It is not surprising given all the snow they have had this winter.  Why is it that some countries seem to be able to cope with snow and others can’t?
