The streets of New York City were empty last night as I made my way back from dinner at around 11:30pm. The wind had picked up and it was pouring with rain as I clung to my umbrella. By this morning Hurricane Irene had been and gone and the high winds and destruction that were threatened thankfully did not materialise. Other parts of the East Coast were not so lucky with reported power outages and plenty of flooding.
For the first time in history, the entire New York transit system shut down at 12 noon today, meaning that all subway stations were closed, no buses are running and the three New York airports are closing down later this evening for outgoing flights with the majority of incoming flights already cancelled. Parts of lower Manhattan have been evacuated for fear of flooding. My friends who live down there are battening everything down as they have not been evacuated and are only one street away from the streets that have been!
