New York Recovers from Hurricane Irene
Categories: From The Editor, Travel News Tags: Hurricane, Irene, New, York, Bloomingdales, Flooding
The streets of New York City were empty last night as I made my way back from dinner at around 11:30pm. The wind had picked up and it was pouring with rain as I clung to my umbrella. By this morning Hurricane Irene had been and gone and the high winds and destruction that were threatened thankfully did not materialise. Other parts of the East Coast were not so lucky with reported power outages and plenty of flooding.
New York Braces itself for Hurricane Irene
For the first time in history, the entire New York transit system shut down at 12 noon today, meaning that all subway stations were closed, no buses are running and the three New York airports are closing down later this evening for outgoing flights with the majority of incoming flights already cancelled. Parts of lower Manhattan have been evacuated for fear of flooding. My friends who live down there are battening everything down as they have not been evacuated and are only one street away from the streets that have been!

Apparently August is a quiet time. You could have fooled me with the amount of tourists I saw looking totally confused faced with the closure. The only alternative was to take a bus, and given that it was 30 degrees yesterday and London buses are not air conditioned, I arrived at my meeting late and hot!

We understand that it is now working properly and counting down to the games in 499 days time.

From April, the Northern line will not be stopping at Tottenham Court Road for 8 months, making it impossible for people to change to or from the Central Line.
